. Stylistically it seems reminiscent of
Mutant X
, show made with the Nineties Cool aesthetic.
Since this show came out circa 2016,
its influences are from a couple of decades earlier.

The premiere episode does a good job of introducing
the show's main characters and concepts.
Clary's mother runs an antiques store with her friend Dot.

), Clary's stepfather,
is a police detective investigating a series of vampiric murders.
These adults all have secrets linked to a magical underworld.
For her eighteenth birthday,
Clary goes out for a night with her friend Simon Lewis (Alberto Rosende -
), and stumbles across the Shadowhunters on a mission.
They are a group of tweenagers who look like models.
Naturally, she fits right in.
Clary's home is attacked by the Circle,
a group of thugs led by Valentine Morgenstern (Alan Van Sprang -

then he will be magically punished.
The mcguffin everyone is after is The Mortal Cup.

Now it turns out that they were brother and sister.
This pours a bucket of cold water on their relationship.
At least now we know that Jace means JC,

the warlock who enchanted Clary's mother.
They encounter his magical defences,
which are easily overcome.
The new Mcguffin they have to locate is the Book of the White,
an ancient spell-book which contains what they need to wake Jocelyn.

). Raphael refuses to do Simon a favour,

This episode has a lot in common with
The Empire Strikes Back
, and not just because a character loses a hand.
They both end on cliffhangers,
with one main character abducted by a villain.

when it comes to new recruits for the Circle.
To set a trap, Isabelle "Izzy" Lightwood (

) must beat up the toughest man in the gymn.
Yes, she uses her girl-power superpower to beat up a mundane.
She might escape the personal gain clause because no money passes hands,
but she certainly gains a thrill out of it.
The Clave is cracking down on unauthorised Vampire activity in NYC.
Raphael does not want to take the blame,
so he sends Simon to find Camille (
Kaitlyn Leeb
). After all, it is all her fault.
Luckily Magnus helps the search.
Clary escapes from the Institute,
and visits the Brooklyn Academy of Art
where she passed the entry interview in the first episode.
Was she meant to be attending classes the whole time?
Izzy thinks that Valentine's ship will be undetectable on sonar
because it has been glamoured ...
not because sonar is only useful underwater.

Magnus cannot cure him,
and Izza wants to transfer him to another facility.

) refuses to drop the lockdown.

No Judges or Jury are present,
never mind a defence advocate.
Victor Aldertree (Nick Sagar -

) tortures Raphael to find Camille (

). Luckily Magnus can heal him,
and Simon still has the magic box
that can help them to trap her.
A demon infiltrates the Institute.
With Victor away at Jace's trial, Lydia is in charge.
The demon smokes around, possessing people
and forcing them to attack their friends.
This episode removes a couple of recurring characters from the cast list.

She sees flashbacks of his childhood with Lilith (

), and realises that she failed him by not rescuing him.
For a vampire or a werewolf,
removing their demon-blood would be a cure.
For a Mage, it would be a curse.
This is a bit like
X-Men 3
, when the government wanted to weaponise the cure.
But the alternative is policing the vampires
and then killing the most extreme ones.
With the massive body-count of previous episodes,
dumping the cure in the NYC water supply is the lesser evil.
Remember, Izzy's plan is to use the cure against Jonathan
so they can murder him without Clary being directly affected.

However, Alec will be dead of old age in less than a century
while Magnus will be functionally immortal if he gets his magic back.

thus forcing the Clave to endorse a mixed marriage
between a Shadowhunter and a Warlock.
Nobody mentions the conflict of interest,
or the power dynamic this would encourage.
Alec is a supernatural policeman - more like
Dredd
: a judge, jury and executioner -
while Magnus is a civilian subject to Alec's laws.
Lorenzo and Magnus have a talk about Found Families,
a LBGT trope further explored in
Our Flag Means Death
. Then as a reminder of the blood family,
Alec's father and brother are in the Los Angeles institute
when it gets attacked by Alec.
Clarissa "Clary" Fray (

) is specifically ordered not to create any more new runes.
Of course, this is completely against her creative nature.
She has the chance to talk Jonathan down -
will she use words and love,
or will she create a new rune to murder her own brother?
And will she be more upset about losing her brother
or losing her superpowers?
The gay wedding has all the survivors pairing off,
except for asexual Raphael who becomes a priest.
How he will do this, as a Mexican citizen with no valid US passport,
is not explained.
Aline and the half-Seelie girl get an on-screen kiss.
Yes, after the lesbian policewoman's storyline
they needed to tick the happy-ending box.
A year later, the world is a better place.
The massive death toll of the show's few years
has actually become creative destruction.
The Shadowhunters now deputise Down-worlders to help out.
Maia's new Jade Wolf restuarant has a menu
that caters for all Down-worlder tastes,
not just the werewolves.
Yes, things should have been like this all along.
Clary (
